You’ve texted, flirted and sent photos to him at only the most flattering of angles and you’re ready for your first date. But, whether you’re semi-into him or completely googled-him-and-everything-over the moon, there’s one nagging thought running through your mind and it’s what do I wear?
The first date can be intimidating, adrenaline pumping, stress inducing and all about sparks and fireworks. Those are the things that us, as dates are supposed to worry about, right? Not the outfit we’re wearing or the makeup we’ve got on. Let’s face it though; if we walked out that door looking anything but confident, the entire time we’re on our date we’d be unfocused and worried about our appearance, when what we should be worried about is connecting with our date.
As you know, what the sales assistant in a store tells you to wear, vs. what guys really want you to wear on a first date are completely different things. Dates vary, they don’t know the guy you’re dating and they don’t know you, your style and what you really want, other than, hopefully, date number two. And, as a Stylist and recently off the market woman myself, I can tell you one thing. Guy’s love mystery and the way you dress should portray that.
Now before you cover yourself with a blanket and head out for your Netflix and Chill (which, by the way, is not what you should be planning for a first date as it’s literally code for an adult sleepover with a complimentary walk of shame), you need to realise, having a sense of mystery is not about covering yourself up, it’s about thinking about your assets like a television series. You wouldn’t watch a tv series if you knew what was going to happen, would you? Well, if you put all of your goods on display at once, chances are, your guy might not stick around to the finale. He might be the type that looks up the spoilers online and goes straight for the date, do and dash, which is not what you want.
The best thing to do in this situation is have a good look at yourself in the mirror. What area of your body do you love? It’s more than acceptable to appreciate more than one part of your body. It could be your waist, your even skin tone, your eyes, your hair, anything. Pick that one thing you love most and make sure that whatever that area is, that you focus on showing that off in a tasteful way. If it’s your bust, wear a v-neck, if it’s your waist, wear a belt, if it hurts to walk up the stairs most days, it’s probably your backside. Men love the chase just as much as girls do, so to warm them up you’ve got to pick your times to show them what you’ve got and what they’re in the running for.
It’s about giving them a taste for something lovely and then helping them to focus on you as a person. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but when you dress for mystery, show off a little, they appreciate it more and give you more attention. When you put it all out on show, they might seem interested at first, but you’ll soon realise that they’re after something else and it’s not your amazing new clutch bag.
